Control Circuitry Lockout. The control board detects one of three internal fault conditions — a gas valve relay stuck in the open (energized) position, a flame-sense circuit failure, or an internal software/self-check error — and locks out the burner rather than continuing to fire under an uncertain control state. Unlike limit lockout (code 13) or ignition lockout (code 14), which both wait a full 3 hours before auto-reset, code 45 auto-resets after only 1 hour, reflecting that it covers control-board self-diagnostics rather than a physical airflow or ignition problem that needs longer to resolve. If the code repeats after the reset interval, a power reset (cycling control power) is the recommended next step, and if it still returns, the control board itself is the likely point of failure rather than any downstream field component. This code does not require the manual reset that gas heating lockout (code 21) does — 45 attempts to clear itself, while 21 will not.
Check flame sensor signal strength with a microamp meter and clean the sensor rod, since a marginal flame-sense circuit is one of the three conditions this code covers. Test gas valve relay operation on the control board — verify the relay contacts open and close correctly and aren't welded closed. Inspect for ground faults anywhere in the control circuit that could produce a false software check error. If the code returns after a power reset and after ruling out the gas valve relay and flame sensor, replace the control board, since a repeating software check error typically indicates internal board failure. Auto-reset after 1 hour.
