IPM Malfunction or IGBT Over-Strong Current Protection. The outdoor control board's Intelligent Power Module (IPM) sends an abnormal voltage signal to the compressor drive chip, which the system reads as an IPM fault or IGBT over-current condition and shuts the compressor down to protect the drive electronics. This differs from P1, which flags supply-side over- or under-voltage detected by a separate voltage detection circuit, and from P2, a thermal protection tied to compressor top temperature — P0 is specifically about the driver signal path between the IPM and the compressor, not incoming voltage or heat. It also differs from P4's inverter compressor drive error, which is flagged by a separate general drive-detection circuit rather than the IPM-to-chip signal itself, though both can stem from compressor wiring problems. The outdoor unit stops running the compressor while this fault is active; the indoor unit typically stays powered but cannot deliver cooling or heating output without outdoor operation.
Check supply voltage stability at the outdoor unit, since voltage sags or spikes can produce an abnormal IPM signal even when the module itself is healthy. Inspect the IPM module on the outdoor control board directly for visible damage, discoloration, or burn marks. Verify compressor wiring is correct, properly terminated, and not shorted to ground or between phases, since a shorted compressor winding can trigger this signal through the drive chip. Distinguish from P4 by checking whether the fault clears once wiring is corrected — a wiring-caused P0 often resolves, whereas true IPM hardware failure will not. Replace the outdoor control board (with integrated IPM) if the module itself is confirmed faulty.
