Code 45 is triggered by a fault at the control level itself — a flame sense circuit failure, a gas valve relay stuck open, or an internal software check error — rather than by a single ignition or limit-switch event like codes 14, 41, or 42. During the lockout the furnace will not attempt ignition or fire the burners until the timer expires or the underlying condition clears. Because the root cause spans three unrelated subsystems, diagnosis means isolating which one tripped before considering control board replacement.
