Full Diagnosis

Code 03 indicates the control board is seeing an unstable cooling/heating call from the thermostat — the demand signal is cycling on and off rapidly rather than holding a steady call — or that the board's internal compressor relay/contactor is failing to hold contact reliably. The two causes look similar to the board because both produce the same symptom: a compressor that won't stay running on a call for conditioning. Depending on the model, the board may simply ignore the erratic demand signal to protect the compressor from short-cycling, or lock out and require a manual reset if it determines the relay itself is misbehaving.

Check the thermostat wiring connections at both the thermostat and the low-voltage terminals on the control board for looseness or corrosion that could cause an intermittent signal. Inspect the low-voltage wire run between the thermostat and outdoor unit for damage, chafing, or a pinched conductor.
