Full Diagnosis

Code 08 indicates the control board has detected incoming line voltage to the outdoor unit outside its normal operating window — either too low or too high — as opposed to code 09, which flags a problem on the secondary, low-voltage (24VAC) control circuit fed by the transformer. For a typical 230V nominal single-phase residential service, boards generally expect line voltage to stay within roughly the 187–253V range; voltage outside that band risks compressor overheating on the low end or insulation and component stress on the high end. When this fault trips, the board locks out compressor operation to protect it; depending on the model it may auto-clear once voltage returns to normal or require a manual reset/power cycle.

Measure incoming line voltage at the outdoor disconnect and at the unit's line terminals, both with the unit idle and while it's trying to run under load, since voltage sag under load points to a supply-side problem. Check the service panel breaker, wire gauge, and run length for undersizing that could cause voltage drop, especially during peak demand. Inspect all line-side connections — disconnect, breaker, and unit terminals — for looseness or corrosion that would cause a voltage drop under load. Confirm the unit isn't sharing an overloaded circuit with other high-draw equipment. If voltage reads consistently high, verify the utility supply and any recent wiring or transformer tap changes with the utility or an electrician.
