Full Diagnosis

Low pressure control has tripped enough times within the same call for cooling/heat that the control has moved from a simple open-switch event (code 21) to an active lockout state. Where 21 simply reports the switch is currently open, L21 means the fault is recurring and persistent enough that the control is now protecting the compressor from continued low-side operation, and on many models requires a manual reset (power cycle or thermostat reset) rather than clearing itself once pressure recovers. It shares root causes with 21 but signals a repeat offender rather than a one-time trip.

Low refrigerant charge or an active leak, an iced/frozen evaporator coil restricting suction pressure, a dirty filter or blocked return/supply restricting indoor airflow, closed dampers or undersized ductwork, a metering device (TXV/orifice) stuck or undersized, a failing low-pressure switch itself, or the unit running in very cold outdoor conditions without low-ambient controls. Because repeated trips risk compressor damage, confirm charge and airflow before resetting rather than cycling power repeatedly.
