Inverter Compressor Drive Error. The outdoor control board's inverter drive circuit detects an abnormal condition in the signal path driving the compressor motor and shuts the compressor down, stopping cooling or heating output from the outdoor unit while the indoor unit's fan and display remain responsive to commands. This is a broader inverter-drive fault than code P0 (IPM Malfunction or IGBT Over-Strong Current Protection), which specifically flags the IPM module detecting an over-current condition on the compressor drive output — P4 covers other drive-signal abnormalities beyond that specific over-current case, such as a broken drive feedback path or a compressor winding fault presenting as an inverter-side error. Because the fault sits in the outdoor unit's control board, the compressor will not attempt to restart until the fault condition is resolved and the unit is power cycled.
Check compressor wiring for shorts, open circuits, or damaged insulation between the outdoor control board and the compressor terminals. Verify supply voltage is within specification, since abnormal line voltage can present as a drive error even when the compressor and board are otherwise healthy. Inspect the outdoor control board's inverter drive circuit for visible damage — burnt components, corrosion, or damaged traces — that would distinguish a board-side failure from a compressor-side one. Test compressor winding resistance directly to separate a bad compressor from a bad drive circuit; replace whichever component — outdoor control board or compressor — testing points to.
