Luxaire Error Code P4

Troubleshooting guide for the Luxaire system fault P4.

What It Means

Compressor discharge line thermal over-temperature protection trip.

Possible Causes

  • Refrigerant overcharge or undercharge driving high discharge temperature.
  • Dirty outdoor condenser coil, fan failure, or restricted outdoor airflow.
  • Inadequate indoor airflow during heating operation.
  • Inaccurate discharge sensor or worn compressor.

Full Diagnosis

A thermal protection trip triggered when the compressor discharge line temperature actually exceeds the safe operating limit — distinct from F25, which reports a failure of the discharge sensor itself rather than a real overtemperature event. P4 typically locks out the compressor for a cooldown period and, like the other discharge/pressure protections such as P2 and P6, may need to trip several times before the board latches a persistent fault.

All Recorded Causes

Check refrigerant charge — both overcharge and undercharge can drive discharge temperature out of range. Inspect the outdoor condenser coil and fan for airflow restriction, dirt buildup, or a failing fan motor that reduces heat rejection. Verify indoor airflow is adequate if the unit is in heating mode. Confirm the discharge sensor itself is reading accurately, and inspect for a worn or failing compressor if charge and airflow check out.

Verify Before Replacing Parts

  1. Confirm the exact Luxaire model family and default context before acting on a generic code description.
  2. Verify airflow first, then confirm operating pressures and temperature relationship before adjusting charge, since check refrigerant charge — both overcharge and undercharge can drive discharge temperature….
  3. Look for restrictions, iced coils, or dirty heat-transfer surfaces that can mimic a charge problem, and separately confirm inspect the outdoor condenser coil and fan for airflow restriction, dirt buildup, or a fai….
  4. After the correction, run the system long enough to confirm the default fault does not return under normal load.
