Full Diagnosis

Low Pressure Trip. The board detects suction-side pressure below the low-pressure switch setpoint and stops the compressor for the retry interval to avoid running with insufficient refrigerant flow, which can starve the compressor of lubrication and cooling. Because this heat pump also runs in heating mode, the same code covers a cause unique to that mode — outdoor coil frost/ice buildup restricting refrigerant flow through the outdoor coil acting as the evaporator — in addition to the low-charge and airflow causes that apply in cooling mode. It differs from code 72 (suction over-temp), which reads suction line temperature rather than pressure and typically points at low charge driving high superheat rather than a pressure switch opening outright; a system can have normal suction pressure and still trip 72, or normal suction temperature and still trip 32. Board retries after 15 minutes; a low-pressure trip that keeps recurring escalates to lockout code 83 rather than continuing to retry every cycle.

Check refrigerant charge and inspect for leaks, the most common root cause of a low-pressure trip in either heating or cooling mode. Verify indoor airflow is adequate — clean filter, open registers, unobstructed return — since restricted indoor airflow starves the indoor coil (acting as evaporator in cooling mode) and can pull suction pressure down. In heating mode specifically, check the outdoor coil for frost or ice buildup that would restrict refrigerant flow through the coil acting as the evaporator; this heating-mode-only cause doesn't apply when the unit trips 32 in cooling mode. Inspect for refrigerant restrictions anywhere in the circuit (kinked line, plugged filter drier, restricted metering device). Board retries after 15 minutes; if the trip recurs repeatedly, expect escalation to the 4-hour low-pressure lockout (code 83).
