Suction Over Temp Event. The board detects suction-line temperature above the allowable superheat limit, indicating the compressor is running too hot on the suction side. The affected circuit's compressor is cut off for the retry interval while the outdoor unit stands down; the indoor blower and any backup heat are unaffected. This is a live, self-clearing event code — if the condition keeps recurring, the board escalates to lockout code 82 rather than continuing to retry indefinitely. It differs from code 79 (compressor no-pump event), which flags a compressor that is running but failing to move refrigerant at all, and from code 32 (low-pressure trip), which reads suction pressure directly rather than suction temperature — a unit can trip 72 with pressure still in range if airflow or filter restriction alone is driving suction superheat up.
Check refrigerant charge (low refrigerant causes high suction superheat, the most common trigger for this code). Inspect for restricted airflow on the indoor coil and check the indoor filter — a dirty filter alone can push suction superheat into fault range even with correct charge. Verify the suction temperature sensor reading against a thermometer at the same location to rule out a false trip. Check outdoor unit airflow and ambient conditions if charge and indoor airflow check out. Board retries after the applicable retry interval; repeated trips advance the unit to suction over-temp lockout (code 82).
