Code A5 is a protective shutdown local to one indoor unit, triggered when that unit's heat exchanger thermistor senses conditions consistent with excessive coil pressure in heating mode or an icing coil in cooling mode — almost always caused by restricted airflow across that specific indoor coil rather than a system-wide refrigerant problem. The affected indoor unit closes its expansion valve and drops out while neighboring indoor units on the same VRV outdoor system keep running unaffected. It differs from A9 (expansion valve/coil hardware fault) in that A5 is airflow- and thermistor-reading-driven, and from E3/E4 (outdoor unit HPS/LPS) in that A5 trips at the indoor coil level before the outdoor high/low pressure switches would ever see the disturbance.
