Full Diagnosis
L5 is triggered when the inverter detects a sudden overcurrent spike on its DC output feeding the compressor, almost always from a compressor that fails to start properly or has an internal electrical fault — the affected outdoor module locks out its inverter compressor immediately to protect the drive electronics. On a multi-module VRV system this isolates to the module with the faulty compressor. Distinguish from L6 (the equivalent overcurrent fault measured on the AC output side) and from L9 (a startup stall/differential-pressure fault that can produce similar symptoms but stems from mechanical lockup rather than an electrical short in the compressor coil).

Defective compressor motor coil (winding short, insulation breakdown, or open winding), compressor startup failure from mechanical lock or seizure, defective inverter PCB output stage, damaged or shorted compressor wiring/connector, moisture or contamination in the compressor windings.
