What It Means

E5 indicates the inverter-driven compressor has either stalled/locked mechanically or its motor windings have overheated, and the outdoor module immediately shuts down its inverter compressor to protect it. On a multi-module VRV system this typically takes only the affected outdoor module offline while other modules in the same system continue supplying the connected indoor units at reduced total capacity — unlike a single-compressor SkyAir unit, where the entire outdoor unit stops. It differs from E6 (a lock/overcurrent fault on a fixed-speed STD compressor, where equipped) and from L5/L9 (inverter-side startup/overcurrent faults that can accompany or precede an E5 trip) — E5 specifically points to the compressor motor itself or the high differential pressure across it at the moment of lockup.
