E8 is an overcurrent trip on the inverter compressor, detected when the outdoor PCB or inverter measures current draw beyond safe operating limits during startup or run. The entire outdoor unit shuts down, and on a multi-split system every indoor unit tied to that outdoor unit loses cooling/heating since they share the single compressor. E8 differs from E5 (motor lock/overheat) and E6 (standard, non-inverter compressor overcurrent) in that it specifically targets inverter-driven compressor circuits and often points to the inverter's power stage rather than the compressor windings alone.
Compressor winding short or ground fault. Inverter main circuit capacitor degraded or failed. Power transistor (IGBT/IPM) on the outdoor unit PCB damaged. Compressor mechanically locked or seized.
