The entire outdoor unit shuts down, and on a multi-split system every indoor unit tied to that outdoor unit loses cooling/heating since they share the single compressor. E8 differs from E5 (motor lock/overheat) and E6 (standard, non-inverter compressor overcurrent) in that it specifically targets inverter-driven compressor circuits and often points to the inverter's power stage rather than the compressor windings alone.
