It is the gas-side counterpart to J8 (liquid pipe thermistor) and differs from C5, which monitors the equivalent gas pipe thermistor at the indoor heat exchanger rather than the outdoor refrigerant circuit. A genuine thermistor failure here can cause erratic expansion valve modulation even before the fault code latches, so intermittent capacity complaints preceding the code are worth noting.
