Full Diagnosis

E4 indicates the indoor unit's EEPROM — the non-volatile memory chip storing the board's configuration and calibration data — has failed a checksum or read verification, rather than any temperature sensor being at fault. This differs from E3, which is a physical T2A sensor hardware fault, and mirrors F12, which reports the same type of memory fault on the outdoor board. Because the indoor board can no longer trust its stored settings, it typically halts normal operation on that indoor unit until the EEPROM is verified or replaced, without affecting other zones.

All Recorded Causes

Power-cycle the indoor unit to see if the EEPROM re-initializes and clears the fault. Check for a recent firmware update or configuration change that may have been interrupted mid-write. Inspect the indoor PCB for signs of moisture, corrosion, or electrical damage near the EEPROM chip. Replace the indoor control board if the EEPROM error recurs after a clean power cycle.

Verify Before Replacing Parts

  1. Confirm the exact York model family and default context before acting on a generic code description.
  2. Verify the sensor or thermistor reading against the expected range for the current operating condition, keeping in mind that power-cycle the indoor unit to see if the EEPROM re-initializes and clears the fault.
