What It Means

H3 reports a malfunction of the high-pressure switch (HPS) itself — a wiring break, connector failure, or switch defect on the outdoor unit's mechanical high-pressure safety device — as opposed to E3, which is the code reported when that same switch actually trips due to a genuine high-pressure event.

Possible Causes

  • Defective or failed high-pressure switch, broken wire or open circuit in the HPS signal path, loose or corroded connector at the switch or PCB terminal, defective outdoor unit control PCB input circuit, physical damage to the switch from vibration or corrosion.

H3 reports a malfunction of the high-pressure switch (HPS) itself — a wiring break, connector failure, or switch defect on the outdoor unit's mechanical high-pressure safety device — as opposed to E3, which is the code reported when that same switch actually trips due to a genuine high-pressure event. In other words, H3 is a sensor/circuit integrity fault while E3 is a real pressure-limit trip; both lock out the compressor as a precaution. H4 is the equivalent circuit-integrity fault for the low-pressure switch.
