A9 indicates a malfunction of the indoor unit's electronic expansion valve (EEV), the component that meters refrigerant flow into the indoor coil during both cooling and heating. When the EEV coil fails to respond to PCB drive signals — whether stuck open, stuck closed, or electrically open — the unit cannot regulate refrigerant flow and shuts down to avoid liquid slugging or coil freeze. This is distinct from A5, which is a symptom-level pressure/temperature protection response rather than a component failure, and from E9, which is the equivalent EEV fault reported on the outdoor unit side.
Defective or burned-out electronic expansion valve coil, disconnected or corroded EEV connector, damaged relay/harness cable between the EEV and the indoor PCB, indoor unit PCB drive circuit failure, valve body mechanically stuck from debris or a manufacturing defect.
