L9 is a stall-prevention fault specific to the compressor startup sequence: the inverter detects the compressor failing to spin up correctly — often because the differential pressure across the refrigerant circuit is too high at the moment of start, or the liquid/discharge stop valve was left closed — and aborts the start rather than forcing a locked-rotor condition. This distinguishes it from L5 and L8, which are overcurrent trips that occur once the compressor is already running, and from E6, which is the standard (non-inverter) compressor motor's overcurrent/lock protection.

Stop valve (liquid or gas) not fully opened after installation or service. Excessive differential pressure before startup (short off-cycle, no equalization time).
